I finally chopped my hair off, and I couldn’t be happier. I have very thick hair, and it can be such a pain when it’s long. I’ve worn it short for majority of my life; I occasionally get the desire to grow it out, but that only lasts for a few months before I chop it off again.
This time I cut it into short choppy layers, and one of the reasons was so that I could do a curly ‘do like Carey Mulligan. Her hair is much thinner than mine, so it doesn’t react quite the same way, but I think I got sort of close. It’s really much easier to create this look than you might think.
Here’s a quick how-to for short, curly hair:
- The first trick is to use a flat iron instead of a curling iron. To achieve the small curls that I have, I used a 1/2” flat iron (which is really tiny when you look at it).
- Take small sections of your hair and, beginning at the root, place your flat iron on the hair and begin twisting it down the hair into a curl. Continue twisting until you reach the end of the hair. I like to pin up the top half of my hair and curl the underneath first, then gradually release some of the hair on top as I curl. I also like to spray one side of my head with hair spray before I start curling to help hold it.
- This style only took about 10 minutes to do and it lasted all day. I actually even went to an outdoor wedding that was rather windy. The messier it got as the night went on, the cuter it was.
- I should also note that my hair doesn’t usually hold curl very well, but because my hair was so short, I think it held better.
- I also twisted my bangs back and secured them with a bobby pin underneath some of the curls.
- In hindsight, I wish I would have made the curls a bit looser. There’s always next time…
