Alright, mama. Let’s talk about teeth whitening.
Raise your hand (figuratively, of course) if you have white teeth you are proud of.

I’m willing to bet majority of you were in the second category, just like myself.
I have always been proud of my smile, because I spent many very dark years in braces (isn’t that how we would all describe it??). However, they have NEVER been up to my standards in terms of whiteness. Common Teeth Whitening Fears
I’ve had certain fears and reservations about whitening that I think are fairly common. Reservations like:
- It will cost too much; I have too many other things to spend money on.
- It will hurt because I have sensitive teeth.
- It will be a long process; I’m a mom, I don’t have much time during the day.
- It won’t work.
My Teeth Whitening History
The only teeth whitening I have ever attempted was Crest White Strips. This felt fairly non-invasive, easy to do, and affordable. I have done it a couple of times in the past, but I didn’t see huge results either time (as I’m typing this, I’m asking myself why did I do it more than once? That was dumb). Plus those strips were super annoying to wear.

Here’s how it works:
The Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kit arrives at your doorstep with all the instructions you need. You simply create your molds for your top and bottom teeth and send them into their lab with a pre-stamped envelope included in your kit.
A week or two later, your perfect-fitting custom trays arrive and you are ready to start whitening!
Whitening is a simple two-step process; starting with the whitening gel and finishing with desensitizing gel. Whitening molds can be worn from 45 minutes up to 2 hours (usually you start at 45 minutes and work your way up), and the desensitizing gel gets worn for 15-20 minutes. While I talk a little funny with them in, the clear molds are similar to what I imagine Invisalign looks and feels like, so you can totally wear them in front of other people (unlike those lame strips) in case you need to answer the door or the phone.
So just what can you do in the time it takes to use the Smile Brilliant whitening system? Here are some ideas:
- Take a shower, blow dry your hair, get dressed and put on your makeup (this is usually when I would wear mine)
- Work
- Binge-watch Netflix before bed
- Prep and cook dinner
- Clean your house
- Take your kids for a walk around the block after dinner in an attempt to tire them out before bed (it’s worth a shot)
Smile Brilliant does suggest you do your whitening before bed so it has more time to work before you eat or drink anything, or they suggest waiting at least 30 minutes after whitening to eat or drink. I tried doing it before bed, but I would instinctively get hangry and wish I could have a nighttime snack (priorities), so I switched to doing it right after breakfast and then wouldn’t eat or drink anything (except water) until lunch. This was a much better time frame for me. The busyness of the getting ready process made me forget about the fact that I was wearing the trays.
Teeth Whitening While Traveling
One of the things I love the most about the Smile Brilliant system is how easy it it to pack up and travel with. While in the midst of my whitening, I escaped for a 3-day work weekend and I just packed it up and took it with me. It’s just 3 little pieces (2 syringes and your trays), so I was able to drop it right into my overnight bag. The only thing it requires is water and your toothbrush, so it was easy to do from my hotel room.

- DISPELLED: I get it. Who has time? This system is amazing because of how easily you can multitask while using it. I found it easy to get done because it wasn’t as much of a nuisance as strips.
