Holidays have suddenly become so much more exciting now that we are living semi-small town life. Our neighboring town of Louisville had a great Labor Day parade that had me nostalgic for my childhood, growing up in a small farm town in Michigan. Every year as a child, we would gather on our town’s Main Street and watch the Farmer’s Festival parade. I remember old cars, tractors, and candy – lots of candy.
I had actually forgotten that candy was a staple of these small town parades, so when they started throwing it out, I saw Mia’s eyes light up and then suddenly tear up because she didn’t have a bag to collect it like all the other kids. Have no fear; being the crafty mom that I am, I told her to use her hat, which made her perfectly happy.
Watching the local high school marching bands, dance teams, floats and fire trucks parade down Main Street tossing candy and celebrating the holiday gave me a new appreciation for small town America, and so much joy that this is what Mia gets to experience as a child. If I was an emotional person – which of course, I am not – I may have gotten choked up at one point during the parade…
I have to say, that I absolutely love our new life here in Colorado. Of course I miss our friends and family, and that is the hardest part of it all, but I think this is where we are meant to be. Moments like those we had on Labor Day are proof positive.
Anyway, back to the fashion portion of this post (and before I start crying on my keyboard)…
I think I’m developing a thing for crop tops. Well, “old lady” crop tops as I like to call them, because they are perfectly modest versions of your favorite high school hottie. Apparently I only like to wear them on American holidays… I first sported one on the 4th of July with a high-waisted white skirt. I decided that the minimal amount of midriff shown was appropriate. I guess this isn’t really a crop top, per say, but you get the idea.
Then on Labor Day, I wore this trapeze top (that’s fancy for voluminous at the bottom) knotted to the side. I threw a white tank top underneath to keep it looking “old lady” chic. Nobody needs to be seeing my 29-year-old-I’ve-had-2-babies navel. Even though I’m not ashamed of my tummy, I still think I’m past the age of showing off too much of it. But, that’s just me.
The tank I chose as a layering piece had a ruffle neckline, which added some texture to the outfit. I paired it with some denim cutoffs, sandals and a simple necklace by Lisa Leonard. It was perfect for the crazy hot weather.
So what say you? Would you wear an old lady crop top?
