I am a sucker for the Oscars. I love the red carpet, I love the speeches, I love the celebrities – I love it all! Every year I announce to my husband that I will be occupying the TV for at least 4 hours on Oscar Sunday. He refuses to watch it with me because he’s a big ol’ party pooper, so this year I decided to invite some girlfriends over who I know will enjoy it with me. And I’m super excited!
What’s an Oscar party without décor and a few games? I am keeping it kind of low-key (as low-key as this DIY addict can handle), but here are some of the details that I am throwing in:
1. Oscar bingo, free download from How About Orange
2. Free printable cardstock Oscar statuettes from Twig & Thistle
3. A DIY Oscar mug made by me to give away to the ballot winner (more info on the DIY below)
4. Oscar ballot, free download from How About Orange
5. Tuxedo favor boxes for table décor, found at the Dollar Tree – pack of 10 for only $1!
6. DIY “Oscars” chalkboard sign
DIY Oscar Mug Transfer Method
I thought it would be fun to make a custom mug for the winner of the Oscar ballot filled with golden treats. I had been wanting to try the sharpie method that I’d been seeing on Pinterest for quite some time, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
You can read more about how the process went and see if it actually worked on my sister-site, I Tried A Pin. But right now, I want to show you a super easy transfer method that I used to get my design on the mug.
I used to do this all the time when I was younger, and I don’t even remember where I learned it. Did anyone else use this method? It works on almost any surface. Here’s how:
- Print out your design or hand-draw it. Turn the paper over and use a lead pencil (non-mechanical) to scribble on the back side of the design.
- Tape your paper to the surface you want to transfer it onto, right side up. Use a pen with a sharp tip to trace an outline of your design. Apply pressure as you trace.
- Remove your paper and you’ll see the design has been transferred to your desired surface.
Now go back and paint or color your design. Just be careful not to smudge the transfer as you work.
The mug isn’t perfect since it was done by hand, but I suppose that’s part of the charm!
