After making the hanging indoor tent, pallet toddler bed, and quilt, the rest was all in the details!
This white cabinet was something I found curbside for free. I didn’t know what I would use it for at the time (although I had an inkling it would be perfect for my little girl’s room one day), and it spent at least 6 months in our garage. After a good cleaning (it was FILTHY), I brought it in and starting filling it with goodies. Mia doesn’t have a dresser, so it gave us a place to put her folded clothes, cloth diapers, and other odds and ends.
The items on the cabinet have been acquired over time. The duck music box was mine as a baby; it has my birth stats on it. Unfortunately, Mia got a hold of it one day and broke the base to bits. Somehow, I managed to piece it back together. Even though it looks a little rough, I couldn’t bring myself to throw it out!
The singer sewing machine is a little plastic play machine that my girlfriend picked up at a garage sale for me for $2. It actually works and has a little pedal and everything; I adore it.
I made the “mommy and me” frame, and the “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” art as well (see how here).
Above the cabinet is a hemp cord strung from two nails that holds some vintage ABC flashcards from Anthropologie (aren’t they gorgeous?). We weren’t allowed to paint the antique walls in our rented home, so I compensate by hanging stuff on every inch!
Speaking of not being able to paint… I broke the rules slightly when it was still a nursery and painted three trees on the wall. I figured they would be easy enough to cover when we leave.
Next to the cabinet, I created a small reading corner with some spice rack bookshelves from Ikea ($3 a piece for a bookshelf? Yes, please.), and a rocking chair that was my husband’s as a little boy. I love that his parents kept it and that we could incorporate something from each of our childhoods in our daughter’s room.
I picked up these little felt boxes at Target in the $1 section; they are perfect for separating her hair barrettes and bows. The fan was only $8.99 at Target as well, and I love how cute and compact it is! I eventually plan to cover the “RE” label with a white flower or something girly.
The final wall in the room is next to the door. It has a coat rack, some art, and a tree (which was originally a jewelry hanger) to hold Mia’s headbands. The top piece of art is from a vintage child’s songbook, and the bottom one is vintage child’s pattern. I hung them with vintage hangers; an idea I pulled from my “Hanging pictures without frames” post.
I guess the final piece of the puzzle were the green shag rug (a total steal from Ikea for only $49.99). The curtains and green bookshelf have been in the room since it was a nursery.
