The only times I’ve ever thought about not having a real Christmas tree in the house have all been times of pregnancy or since I’ve had kids; times when it felt like the cons might outweigh the pros (which is pretty big for me, because I LOVE living Christmas trees).
The first year I considered foregoing a living tree, I was 9 months pregnant and lacked the energy (and clearly, the sanity) to bring home and decorate a tree. Plus, we had just moved into a new place about a month prior and I was still tired from unpacking. We ended up buying a tiny 2-footer and putting it up on a table.
Every year since then, I have contemplated the necessity of a real tree, as I’ve always had a baby or toddler in the house to worry about. I’ve surrounded trees with baby gates to deter them in the past, and this year, I find myself fighting a daily battle with my 3 and 1 year old to STOP TOUCHING THE ORNAMENTS! We’ve only had two casualties thus far (ornament casualties, that it is – not child casualties…).
My husband would have been perfectly happy to forego a real tree this year (since he tries to talk me into buying a fake one every year), but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I love that Christmas tree scent way too much, plus the process of going and picking out a tree – it’s tradition!
But if I did ever decide to ditch the tree, there would be tons of great alternatives to go with. Thanks to Pinterest, the world of Chrsitmas tree alternatives is abundant.
