I’ve been in a planning frenzy these last couple of weeks trying to figure out what in the world I am going to do in the nursery. For some reason, I’ve been very noncommittal and totally overthinking the whole thing. But it’s time to get down to business because I’ve got a little over 2 months before my due date (*insert scary, panic face here*).
When it comes to the nursery, I don’t exactly have a blank slate to start with, which makes it even more difficult. The walls are painted a light yellow (not the prettiest yellow, either) and because we rent, we aren’t allowed to paint. So after much searching for appropriate color schemes that would play down the yellow and still scream “boy,” I decided on a yellow/teal/mint/grey palette.
I thought I was done with the nursery, but then I ran across a map-covered lampshade on Pinterest and just had to do it for the nursery. I already had some pieces of leftover map from when I made the paper airplanes for the mobile, and a boring lamp with a fading lampshade – so how could I pass that up?
Hear that? It’s a huge sigh of relief (and exhaustion) escaping my mouth. Our nursery if finally complete! And at 38 and a half weeks along, I’d say we finished just in time. Although Lincoln will probably sleep in our room for a little while when we first return from the hospital and therefore won’t need his nursery to be move-in-ready, I know I’ll lack the energy and motivation to finish once I have a newborn at home. So let’s take a little tour, shall we?
I can’t stand empty walls. When I move out of our rental, I’m going to have an awful lot of holes to fill, because I hang something on every inch. After hanging so many gallery walls, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way, including one from Young House Love that has made arranging and hanging easier than ever. Anytime I have a wall to cover, I turn to this technique, which has simplified the process more than I could have dreamed! It’s so simple, I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it myself.
Since my son’s nursery has a bit of an industrial feel to it, I really wanted to get one of those zinc letters from Anthropologie to hang on his wall. But since they run about $18 per letter, I decided to take the cheaper route and make a faux one.
This past week, my husband and I finished a huge piece of our nursery puzzle – the antiqued dresser. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to have this baby (no pun, intended) in its place in the nursery, ready to be filled with little boy things!
We purchased the dresser for $25 on Craigslist. It was pretty ugly, scratched, and had water stains on the top. I knew I wanted to paint it, so I didn’t really care about the finish; I just was happy to find a solid wood dresser for so cheap.
Today I’m super excited to share my latest project in our nursery – starched fabric wall clouds. I only put these clouds on the two walls above the crib, and I’ll be using the same fabric to make some pillows and a cloud/airplane mobile. You can see some of the other ideas I have for the nursery in my inspiration board.
Putting the clouds on the walls was so simple; I used the starch techinque that is all over Pinterest. Have you seen it? The recipe and instructions are easy, and when you are done with the fabric, it peels right off the walls without leaving any damage – a perfect solution for renters!
