The Mombot

Motherhood Simplified.

What the heck am I doing here? (i.e. my manifesto)

April 27, 2016 | 3 Comments

A few weeks ago, I attended a business and crafting conference for handmade shop owners and it rocked my world. There is just something so amazing about being with your people, ya know? Especially for creatives. We just feed off of each other. Most of us are a bit quirky, a lot of us are super introverted, and pretty much all of us have such creative minds and hands. In short, we’re amazing (ha ha).

I attended the conference because I am in a season of life where I am thinking constantly about my business, my brand and where to go next. In assessing the future, I also have to think about whether the next steps are possible with three kids under the age of 6. Because I have big, grand dreams for my business, but I also know that now is not necessarily the time to chase them. When the kids are in school all day, it will be a different life.; but for now, I am taking this journey one slow step at a time…

Craftcation is a conference chock-full of business classes; things like how to create a media kit, learn value-based pricing, how to blog, how to rock Instagram… and so on. But you also have an awesome selection of crafting and cooking classes to choose from – everything from sushi to sewing. THIS is the kind of world I want to live in daily (if only).

I attended mostly business courses, really wanting to get a lot out of my time there and learn new things about where I need to go next. While I was there, I slowly began to chart a course for my business and work out kinks in my existing brand. I had been struggling with how to make The Mombot and my stationery line, Nuts & Bolts Paper Co. more cohesive. Through seminars and one-on-one conversations, I began to figure it all out and now I’m doing a slight re-brand (really more of a modification).

nbpaperco-mombot-rebrand

You may have noticed my updated logo at the top of the page. Isn’t she just the cutest? The colors and fonts match my stationery line, making them a little more cohesive and recognizable. So hopefully when you see “The Mombot” you think “Nuts & Bolts Paper Co.” and vice versa.

A big piece of the puzzle that’s been missing for me was the answer to “what the heck am I doing here?”

I needed to figure out why exactly it is that I write here in my little corner of the blogosphere… Why did I start and what’s my motivation?  What’s the purpose behind my brand? WHAT DO I EVEN STAND FOR? Honestly, I hadn’t ever sat down and thought about it. I usually just spew some stuff out in a post and leave it at that, hoping someone finds it interesting enough to read. And I create products because I feel like it or because I got a random idea, but there wasn’t necessarily a unified purpose behind it.

So recently I sat down and I focused and I thought about it, and I realized something – I had a reason for doing what I do. Huh. Imagine that.

So I wrote a little something about what I do, why I do it and how it all began. Not only for myself, but also for you. So that you can know a little more about me and my motivation for The Mombot, as well as the products I create. If you’re interested, I encourage you to go read my about page where I lay it all out.

Whether you landed on this blog accidentally or you’ve been reading it for a while, you might learn something new about me.

Most importantly, I really want you to know what I believe in and why I write (and what “The Mombot” actually means).

And in case you want the CliffsNotes, here’s my newly written manifesto:

My Manifesto.

  • I am for aspiring to be and working toward being a great mom.
  • I am for women pursuing the passions and interests planted in their hearts long before motherhood (and also the ones planted after).
  • I am for using television to keep your kids busy so you can get in a quick yoga session and a shower.
  • I am for letting dad tackle bath time and bedtime so you can go to Target ALONE.
  • I am for enjoying a glass of wine while attending an 8 pm webinar on a topic that you want to learn about.
  • I am for securing your air mask before securing your child’s (metaphorically speaking).
  • I am for taking care of you.

What are you passionate about? What do you identify with aside from “mom”?
Join me and we’ll figure this out together, friend.

I get it. It's a little weird. But the girls I've I get it. It's a little weird.
But the girls I've seen do it best, look adorable.

I think it looks best with an oversized tee or sweatshirt, tennies or slides, and a small crossbody bag.

You can't argue with comfort.

For the record, these are women's sleep shorts that I've had a couple of years from Old Navy. If you buy actual men's boxers, you might consider sewing up the pee pocket 😜

Don't spend a lot on this trend; these shorts are made from the thinnest of fabric and shouldn't cost much. Don't be fooled by a retailer that wants you to spend just because it's trendy.

But if you see some cute boxers and want to give it a go - then do! Bonus - if/when the trend ends, you'll have pajamas on the ready 👏

It's solid weekend wear, but I'm not going out to dinner in it...

Another project down in my son's room! I knew I w Another project down in my son's room!

I knew I wanted some sort of built-in feature in this bedroom, but it was hard to figure out what, because we turned it into an active space where he could run and play and needed a lot of room.

So I settled on a built-in bookcase with the slatted design feature, which I'm in love with!

The best part about it is that if he ever decides to upgrade his bed, the space will also accommodate a full or queen size bed going in the opposite direction. It adds so much interest to this room and hopefully will be here for a long time!

One of the things I love most about DIY projects is figuring out how to make something - it's like a giant puzzle. I saw photos of these slotted wall room dividers on Pinterest and just figured it out as I went. All in all, I had very few hiccups and it only took me a few hours to put together. I think I only cursed once?!? And so I call that an extreme DIY win...

Now that the sports wall, the climbing wall, and the built-in feature are complete, the last thing to do in here is some additional painting. I'm thinking of using a contrasting blue color for the closet doors and back side of the built-in, and perhaps trimming out the window with it as well. Then I need to switch out the light for a fan and this.room.is done 🙌

Details: I used two IKEA billy bookshelves, screwed together and secured to the wall. Then wrapped them in white oak plywood. I ripped down 2x4s into 1.5x1.5" square dowels (heavily sanded!) and used pocket holes on the back side of each to secure to the bookshelf and the 1x4 in the ceiling. It's very sturdy!

This climbing wall took half a day and cost under This climbing wall took half a day and cost under $100!

We are lucky enough to have 13' ceilings in our bedrooms, so a climbing wall seemed to make sense in my son's room as we worked on the remodel.

He is a super active kid with #ADHD, so his room redo has involved lots of activity spaces! Go back in my reels to see past projects and follow to see me finish this up!

I added very subtle striping to the wall to mimic a soccer field and keep things classy. ⚽

Stick around to see the next project - a climbing wall!
