My daughter’s room is one that we redesigned a while ago and I still haven’t shared pictures here on the blog!
I suppose it’s partly because I keep adding to it and it honestly still isn’t “complete.” But if I waited until something was 100% complete in my house, I wouldn’t photograph any of it! It’s always a work in progress over here. So I finally told myself to knock it off and share it, even though I feel like there is more to do.
My daughter used to share the basement with her younger brother and our toddler was upstairs with us in this bedroom. But since she is our only girl, we knew that it would eventually make sense to give her her own “big girl room” and make the boys share. So as soon as our toddler was old enough, we made the switch. It was absolutely the right call; this girl needs her space.
It can be tough to design a space for an 8 year old with an opinion… she wanted some sort of mural on the wall with blue and green and birds and trees… but mama HATES to paint (plus, I had no idea what she was talking about…), so I really wanted to keep the walls the same grey color they already were. In the end, mom wins – always.
I took her shopping with me to pick out some of the accessories, her desk that we found at a local antique store, and her fur stool. So she definitely had a say, but most of the work was done by me. (all sources linked at end of post)
This room has its challenges; it’s quite small and we wanted a trundle bed so that guests would have a place to stay as well as friends that slept overnight. So figuring out where to put the bed so that the trundle could pull out was no easy task. That rug was a total steal on Target.com for only $26… I’m not even sure how it happened, but when I added it to my cart, that was the price, so I jumped at it! Unfortunately, the rug makes pulling out the trundle a total pain… but it sure is pretty.
We landed on this layout for her big girl room, but I can see it changing, to be honest. I’m still not convinced it’s the best way to go.
Some of the things that still need to happen in here are for us to put in a closet organizer and closet doors (I’ve conveniently left out photos of the doorless closet).
She has also had that darling stand-up mirror for quite a while but at this point, it’s barely holding together, so I think it’s almost time for that to go. I will likely get rid of that library cart as well and figure out a better storage option for her, because she desperately needs it. She is quite the bookworm with nowhere to keep all of her books.
Like I said, it’s all a work in progress!
Her favorite space is definitely her desk (which, by the way, NEVER looks this clean). She loves to craft, so this desk is constantly covered with tape, paper scraps, markers, pictures cut out of things stolen from my work trash, string, glue… it’s a bit of a nightmare.
I love the collage over her bed, which has a quote from the verse that we chose for her when we dedicated her to the Lord as a baby. I talked about it on Instagram here. (source linked below)
It was SO fun to create a girly space for her big girl room. I spent a lot of time designing neutral spaces that work for both a girl AND a boy because they have always shared a room, so splitting them up has been really fun.
I’ll let you know what else changes and morphs in this room as it happens. I’m sure it’s not too far off!
