So today we say goodbye to Oprah. Well, goodbye to the Oprah Show, anyway. For years I have watched her tackle tough issues, give away generous gifts, and interview celebrities. Whether or not you agree with her philosophies (yes, I’m talking to you, brother-in-law), you can’t deny that she has done so much good over the years.
Who didn’t shed a tear when all those boys who were recipients of Oprah’s Morehouse College scholarship fund walked down the aisles during yesterday’s farewell show? There were tons of them! And all those little girls in Africa who now have an education thanks to her generosity… and the other ladies who joined Dakota Fanning to thank Oprah for showing them that women can do anything. I was moved by it all.
But here’s what I will miss the most: her favorite things episodes. I laugh so hard every year watching the audience’s reaction to Oprah’s surprise announcement that it’s her “FAVORITE THINGSSSS EPISOOOOOODE!” Enjoy it with me:
Of course, what’s even funnier is the extremely accurate depiction of these favorite things episodes on Saturday Night Live. I wish I could find a clip from the episode where Amy Poehler’s head explodes, because that was really the icing on the cake. Somehow, it’s impossible to find on the Web (I think Oprah probably owns the Web…). Here’s a short clip of one of the SNL parodies; pay special attention to the audience reaction:
It’s tough to call it a parody when it so accurately depicts reality.
At any rate, we’ll miss you Oprah; you and your crazy audience. Thanks for the years of hilarious favorite things episodes (oh, and all that other stuff you did too).
