Moving right along in our DIY gift series for Christmas, this week I’m covering DIY gifts for kids. We’ve already covered handmade gifts for men, women, and mom, so be sure and check them out if you still have some open spots on your gift list. Next Monday I will finish up the series with DIY gifts for friends/neighbors/coworkers; they will be simple gifts that you’ll have plenty of time to make before Christmas comes.
Turns out, there are tons of great DIY gift ideas for kids of all ages. From toddler to elementary, these 10 gift ideas will help you cover everyone on your list – and regardless of your skillset, because some of them are very simple (see the DIY checkerboard below)!
DIY gifts for Kids #1: Homemade hopscotch mat
Source: Tip Junkie
This DIY hopscotch mat is perfect for kids to play with on cold or rainy days, or even to take to grandma’s house!
DIY gifts for Kids #2: Painted block puzzle
You can make this as easy or as difficult as you want, since you choose the design. For toddlers, how about a big circle? For older kids, perhaps an animal silhouette. Can’t draw or paint? Cut a photo or picture from a magazine into squares and adhere them to the blocks with Mod Podge. Most craft stores even sell the unfinished wooden blocks, so there is no wood cutting involved.
DIY gifts for Kids #3: Crayon and coloring book carrier

If you’re an avid sewer, I think you could figure out the dimension for this on your own, but you can also buy the pattern for only $10. It would certainly be worth the money, because I can imagine making this carrier over and over again as a gift!
DIY gifts for Kids #4: Fort building kit
I love this idea for older kids! It’s so helpful to keep all the supplies in one place so that they will all be there when you are ready to build a fort on rainy days. The contents are simple (things like rope and clothespins and a flashlight), and even the bag is made from a thrifted pillowcase. This gift is definitely cost-effective. See the tutorial here.
DIY gifts for Kids #5: Wooden memory game
This is a great gift for preschoolers. Make it with an old Jenga game found at a thrift store, some fabric or scrapbook paper scraps, and Mod Podge.
DIY gifts for Kids #6: Crayon roll tutorial
This is my own tutorial. This crayon roll is a perfect gift for toddlers!
DIY gifts for Kids #7: DIY canvas checkerboard

This tutorial for a DIY checkerboard is really simple (even for beginning crafters) and makes for a great travel game for kids of all ages.
DIY gifts for Kids #8: DIY polar fleece hats

I love these simple DIY fleece hats. Martha even gives you the appropriate head sizes for newborn to adult so you can make them for whoever you want.
DIY gifts for Kids #9: DIY stick horse

This has quite a few supplies (you might already have some in your stash), but the tutorial actually looks pretty simple! Older kids would love these adorable DIY ponies.
DIY gifts for Kids #10: DIY mini lounger

How adorable is this DIY mini lounger? My kids would love to watch TV on one of these!
